Ignore All Quicknotes That Use the Randomizer: How About It?

Category: Zone BBS Suggestions and Feedback

One of the least flattering and most annoying aspects to this site is the randomizer. I actually drew several wrong impressions on people based on quotes in Quicknotes using that thing. It's not Mad Libs, doesn't come off that funny, and is rather a window licker's toy. Fine if one wants it, but one should have to opt into its use. The randomizer is why I have not shown the Zone on a computer screen. Due to public Quicknotes, I have met some pretty cool people on here.
However, that randomizer makes me think of when your kid is little and you laugh at the bad joke because you're the dad, so you want them to feel good, but it don't wear well on anyone over age six.
Just my thoughts, let the flames begin ...

personally, it would be really boring if i didon't see notes from the randomiser. it's so funny. also, it means you wouldn't see logins that use the randomiser. the only way i see it working is if you enable the option in the acount settings to be taken out from the randomiser, then why should you see it if you chose to not take part in it.

just my thoughts

Good enough, but man. No other sites offer it. Is conversation that flaccid on here one needs the randomizer? Sad commentary on the place, but ...

Post 4 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Friday, 07-May-2010 18:08:34

Yes, please, please implement this option.
You can still enable users to see randomizer log ins, those are fine, but the qn conversation with the randomizer are the main reason I am just about giving up on the site sometimes and not participating in public chat. Sure,if people want it and really think it's funny, who am I to judge, but if I could ignore this, all the better.

yes, fabulous idea.

Post 6 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 2:04:27

I must admit, after learning about how many millions of legs someone has, or seeing one person get turned in to another... ... ... over and over and over and over and over and over again, I've been tempted to put a few people on ignore.

Post 7 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 5:23:29

hahaha me also, but that's what you should do. you don't like it, put them on ignore.

Post 8 by Izzito (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 08-May-2010 8:52:21

That's a great idea. Fine if people like it butit would be nice to be able to ignor it.

Post 9 by season (the invisible soul) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 10:25:53

great idea, something i hope admin will take serious consideration and work on it.

agree with post 1, most ramdomiser quicknotes become somehow kiddy. i think, people do misuse the most time, and it make perfectly no sense.

if one is bored, they should have more meaningful things to do than come on here, and play on ramdomiser for hours...

Yes, I agree with this idea, though possibly still seeing randomizer login/out messages would still be a good idea. It's fine for the people who use it, but I rarely use it myself and see it regularly overused, especially recently. After the zone's birthday when everyone could use the randomizer for 2 weeks, it became so bad that I ended up having to put several people on ignore! So yes, I agree with this idea, with the exception of still seeing login/out messages.

Yes a choice is good. I don't care much I just pass it over mentally, but I can see the point some. When you want it turn it on, if not... I don't absent myself from it, because it doesn't bother me to be on. Should be an easy fix?

Post 12 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 13:29:54

half the problem with many of those using the randomizer is that they 1. use it over and over and over and over again and 2. don't even attempt to use it creatively. I mean, sure, sometimes its funny, and when you're a premium I can understand messing with it a bit just to get a feal for how it all works and because sometimes it can be put to good use but, it would be nice to be able to not see the repeated same old same old randomized crap from the same people over and over again.
There are days sure where I can ignore it but, its been more likely to drive me away from qn's when you have these people constantly abusing it. I think the randomizer's devolved from just being something to sometimes creatively spice up a conversation into this thing that people just constantly abuse out of bordum.

Post 13 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 17:08:32

If you're that bored, send randomized notes to yourself by selecting yourself in the Quicknotes when you do it.

Post 14 by Sword of Sapphire (Whether you agree with my opinion or not, you're still gonna read it!) on Saturday, 08-May-2010 23:31:30

Robozork, I totally agree with you. I don't use public qn's myself, but when I did, I found the randomizer so incredibly annoying and childish.

Post 15 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 09-May-2010 12:43:04

Robo, I agree with you as well. the randomizer has always driven me nuts, too. That's why I've opted out of being included in it. It'd be great to say just ignore those who use it, but I happen to like several who do, and dont' want to put them on ignore. That, and I'm a CL, so I can only ignore a user in a very rare case.

Unfortunately, I don't know that there's a way to code the site so that it knows when a QN makes use of the randomizer, and would filter that out for you. I'm not a techie, but I just don't see how it could be done. I'll pass this one on to the staff, and see what their thoughts are, but I'm not sure it's practical, even if it is desirable.

Post 16 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 09-May-2010 22:52:10

Although I completely agree with Striker's post, I'm also not sure it could even be done, as SisterDawn mentioned.

Post 17 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Monday, 10-May-2010 11:25:03

I'm not sure it could be either. I really have mixed feelings about this too. I rarely have publics on, but when I do, it can get a bit annoying, but as far as private QN's are concerned, why not just kindly ask the sender not to do it, and if they persist, put them on ignore. The randomizer can be really funny in some instances.

Post 18 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Monday, 10-May-2010 19:36:55

agreed with brooke. Like i've said, yes, it can be funny, it can be a great thing to spice up a conversation *When! Used! Creatively! as in not spamming same old same old crap. but anyway, I've said my piece...

Post 19 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 11-May-2010 12:51:36

I've already passed it on to the staff. those that have commented are in agreement with this, but J or Chris have said nothing about it.

Post 20 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Thursday, 13-May-2010 15:17:48

I like it...it makes me laugh. I think most people understand when they are beeing randomized...it doesn't always put words together logically.

Post 21 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Friday, 14-May-2010 12:05:36

O yes, the randomizer is a cool little feature, but I do think there should be an option to opt out completely if at all possible for those who don't like it. I also agree that it really does get annoying when used accessively.

Post 22 by malthe (Pimply-Faced Youth) on Wednesday, 09-Jun-2010 19:14:36

Please implement this, I'd <3 you forever.

Post 23 by Miss M (move over school!) on Wednesday, 09-Jun-2010 19:42:04

God. Please, please, please. Or just limit the amount of times a person can use the randomizer per 5 or 10 minute period or something.

Post 24 by Izzito (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 09-Jun-2010 22:13:57

this would be just flat out delicious lol. If i see another this person is such on such day lol

Post 25 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Thursday, 10-Jun-2010 9:50:55

I totally agree. Limit it, or something. Maybe three randomizer QN's per hour or something like that. Maybe five.

Post 26 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 10-Jun-2010 14:16:33

Just perspective, imagine if someone who you know as a friend walks by and sees this randomized quotes on the Quicknotes.
How did you react when you first saw it? How would someone you know, say a friend or family member who can see react when they saw it? It's one thing to be esoteric, bad-ass, or some other personality variant, even the 'omg' 'lmfaoo croud, but this randomizer? It's just ... um ...???

Post 27 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 10-Jun-2010 14:17:20

At least bracket or color or modify the text coming in from the randomizer somehow so it's distinguished on the screen for what it isn't.

Post 28 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Thursday, 10-Jun-2010 16:05:11

I had my fun with the randomizer, but it's really getting old now, to me.
